Introduction to Urusei Yatsura

80sanime:

I love Urusei Yatsura. It’s certainly my favorite comedy from Takahashi Rumiko, and also some of my favorite work from Oshii Mamoru. It’s also one of the very first series I picture in my head when someone mentions 80s anime, and as such I’m always quick to recommend it when anyone asks.

But lately every time I do, some part of me thinks, isn’t just sending someone off to watch close to 200 episodes plus various movies and OVAs worth of material without any sort of compass kind of irresponsible? Yeah, it’s a sitcom that you don’t have to necessarily watch in order, but then there’s the chance you’ll miss out on the introductory episode of some important character (many of whom don’t first appear until fairly late) which might leave you confused later. And, for all the truly great material to come out of the series, you’d be lying if you didn’t admit there wasn’t also a lot of lesser quality stuff to slog through, especially earlier on.

With all that in mind, I wondered if it wouldn’t be useful to draft up a little beginner’s guide to watching Urusei Yatsura to help people just starting out to get a better foothold.

So… I did! Basically, here’s my recommended order of viewing things the first time around, after which you should be set to handle any and all of what the series has to offer. It’s almost certainly not perfect and very biased (all my favorite episodes!) but here’s hoping it might be of some help!
